Install a Car Tracking System Yourself

There are many reasons why one might want to install a car tracking system. Apart from the usual tracking purposes, it can also be used as an anti-theft device. It can also be used to monitor a particular driver and his driving habits. GPS devices have many professional purposes as well. In businesses like cargo delivery, car rental or ambulance service, these devices are indispensable.

Whatever might the purpose be, these devices work flawlessly and are actually easy to install as well. Once installed, these devices work with the global positioning system so they can deliver real-time location of the vehicle always. The direction of movement, the speed and of course, the location can be known remotely. The technology has reached such heights that these devices can also tell of the time spent halting at different locations. One can even opt for geo-fencing where the alarm will be activated once the car ventures outside the predefined route. All these data can also be stored in a central database for future reference.

Coming to the installing of such devices to your car, first thing you need is to find a power source for those. There are two ways to provide power to these devices. One can use dedicated batteries to power it, or one can also feed it from the battery of the car. If you want the second option, you need to go to a professional. However, if using dedicated power source, it is very easy to install and anyone can do it. You need to buy the device, and also a magnet-proof and weather-proof case to house it.

Now power the device using the battery cell and put the active device into the case. Put the case somewhere where it will not be seen easily. Next step is to test the device.

Once you have put the case into a safe and hidden area of the car, take the car out and drive for a while. Note the location, the speed, the direction and the halt timings manually. After the drive, check if the case is safe and secure where you put it. Now use the computer and check the data collected by the device. Compare it against your manual notes. If everything matches, you have successfully installed a GPS device yourself. If not, you better consult a professional. Also, keep a note about the battery so you don’t run out of power.

RV Spring Preparation Checklist

Your RV has been sitting idle over the winter. Now the early signs of spring are here and it’s time to take it out of storage and prepare the coach and chassis for this years camping season. If you’re like me, you want to have some type of logical sequence to follow rather then haphazardly checking the unit out. I made a simple checklist to use so that nothing is overlooked. I prefer to do the majority of spring preparation myself. If you’re more comfortable having someone else do it you can schedule an appointment with a reputable RV service center to have it done.

* Depending on how your unit was winterized it will need to be de-winterized. If you used non-toxic RV antifreeze you need to run fresh water through the entire system until all traces of antifreeze are gone. To remove it from the 12-volt water pump add water to the fresh water-holding tank, turn the pump on and open all water faucets. When the antifreeze is out of the system turn the pump off and take the water heater out of the by-pass mode (if applicable). Re-install any water filter cartridges you removed for storage.

* At this point I like to sanitize the water system. Make sure all of the drains are closed and drain plugs are installed. Take a quarter cup of household bleach for every fifteen gallons of water your fresh water tank holds. Mix the bleach with water into a one-gallon container and pour it into the fresh water holding tank. Fill the fresh water holding tank completely full of water. Turn the water pump on and open all faucets, run water until you smell the bleach. Close the faucets and let it sit for at least twelve hours. Drain all of the water and re-fill the tank with fresh water. Turn the pump on and open all faucets until you no longer smell bleach. It may be necessary to repeat this process to eliminate all signs of the bleach.

* With the water system under pressure inspect for water leaks. Check the operation of the toilet.

* Wash the unit thoroughly. This is a good time to inspect the roof and body seams, and window sealants for cracking that would allow water to get in. Consult a dealer for sealants compatible with these materials.

* Inspect the operation of the awning and clean the awning fabric as required.

* Inspect the tires for signs of dry rot. Inflate all tires to the recommended COLD tire pressure.

* Lubricate all hinges and locks with spray lubricant.

* Remove any tape or protective covering you may have put over LP gas vents to keep insects and rodents out. Check any mousetraps you may have put out. Open all doors and compartments and check for rodent intrusion and water damage.

* Inspect and clean the interior.

* Plug in any appliances that you unplugged for storage and replace any dry cell batteries you may have removed. This is a good time to put new batteries in items like smoke alarms.

* Test the operation of the carbon monoxide alarm, LP gas leak detector and smoke alarm.

* Check the fire extinguisher. Be sure it is fully charged.

* Reset any breakers you may have turned off. If you removed any fuses for storage re-install them.

* Clean or replace air conditioner filters if it wasn’t done prior to storage and remove any covers that were put over air conditioners.

* Open vents and windows and air the unit out.

* If you removed the coach and chassis batteries for storage install them. Whether they were removed or not check the electrolyte levels, clean the terminals and clamps, and check the charge level in all batteries. Recharge batteries as necessary.

* Check the operation of the electric steps if applicable. Lubricate step mechanism.

* Test the operation of the hydraulic jacks if applicable. Check hydraulic fluid level.

* Test the operation of the back up camera and monitor if applicable.

* If you didn’t change the oil and filters in the generator prior to storage this is a good time to do it. Inspect the generator exhaust system for damage prior to starting. Start and run the generator for two hours with at least a half rated load on it. Consult the generators owner manual for load ratings.

* Turn the generator off and plug the unit into shore power. Turn the refrigerator on in the electric mode. Allow sufficient time to cool and check for proper operation.

* Check all 12-volt interior lights and accessories.

* Test the monitor panel for proper operation.

* Check the operation of slide outs if applicable.

* Check the remaining 120-volt appliances for proper operation.

* Test the Ground Fault Interrupter (GFI) for proper operation.

* Turn the refrigerator off, leave the doors open and allow sufficient time for it to get to room temperature so it can be checked in the gas mode.

* Before I use the LP gas system I have a leak test and gas operating pressure test preformed. A qualified technician with the proper equipment should do these tests.

* After this is accomplished turn the LP gas valve on and check the operation of all LP gas appliances. Be sure the water heater is full of water before testing the water heater. If a gas appliance is not operating properly have it inspected by a qualified technician. Insects are attracted to the odorant added to LP gas and build nests that can affect the appliance from operating properly.

* If your unit was in long-term storage and you didn’t change the engine oil and filter prior to storage this would be a good time to do it.

* Check all fluid levels in transmission, power steering, engine coolant, engine oil, windshield washer and brakes. Consult vehicle owners manual.

* Start the engine and check for proper readings on all gauges. Check for proper operation of dash air conditioner.

* Perform a complete chassis lubrication if it wasn’t done prior to storage.

* Check the condition of windshield wiper blades and replace them if necessary.

* Check the operation of all chassis lights.

* Make sure the vehicle emissions/inspection sticker is up to date.

* In addition to this if you have a pop-up or travel trailer the wheel bearings and brakes (if equipped) should be inspected at least once annually. Inspect any canvas for dry rot and tears; inspect all hitch work and the coupler for damage. Inspect the breakaway switch and pigtail for proper operation.

Happy Camping ,

Barracuda Stun Guns Up Close

Barracuda only uses metal hydride (Ni-Mh) batteries in its rechargeable stun guns. Nickel metal hydride batteries do not suffer from a “memory” effect. This means that Ni-Mh always charges your device thoroughly to the top of its capacity no matter what your recharge schedule is. Other lesser batteries lose its discharged memory and may assume that it is “empty” even if charged when it is half “full.” The net effect is that they may not charge fully unless you completely discharge the batteries. And that’s definitely not acceptable with a stun gun. (you will almost certainly burn the electrodes if you try to discharge it in air.) So it’s “no worries” with a Barracuda rechargeable unit.

Have you noticed the stun gun voltage wars? One manufacturer claims 1 million volts, then the next one is 2 million and so on. We have manufacturers’ claims of up to 8 million volts now. It is marketing gone crazy as stun gun voltages are very difficult to measure especially as it relates to force on a body. Stun guns’ dirty little secret is that voltage is not the most important measurement of power. It’s the amperage. Most units routinely produce 1-3 milliamps. This is reasonable given the modest power sources of citizen sun guns (typically 3 to 18 volts). Barracuda stun guns have an output of 4.5 milliamps which is higher than other units but still very safe.

I recently talked with Bret Harders, owner of Over The Counter Intelligence Inc who distributes the Barracuda brand exclusively. I asked him why he includes no flashlight on his units.

“We feel it’s just another button to confuse you in an emergency. Moreover, an LED light array can drain needed power from the stunning device” he said. “Picture a circumstance where you are using your stun gun as a flashlight one night. After a point in time, the dreaded happens. There are rushed footsteps coming up behind you. You turn around with just enough time to zap the attacker right at the side of the neck, a very effective spot. Blit… blit… blit. All that come out is a pathetic little spark! You had forgotten to recharge the unit lately and that 15 minutes use of a flashlight could mean the difference between life and death, literally!”

That got my attention fast. While we continue to sell thes products with flashlights, we try to warn customers to always keep the stung gun fully charged and use the flashlight feature sparingly.

All Barracuda units have the wrist strap pin safety feature. The pin which has to be inserted into the stun gun in order for I to work, is attached to a wrist loop to be worn around your wrist. If someone were to take the stun gun away from you, the pin would detach, rendering it inoperable.

Text to Screen – A Very Clever Use of Technology

I was at my friend’s hotel bar the other night and had the usual great time dancing to the live bands they have playing 7 days a week. This is a special bar with a very interesting business model – because in fact it hosts a television show that highlights up and coming new bands with interviews of the band members and several of their songs played on TV where the bands can demonstrate their talent to a live “studio” audience. The business model is interesting because rather than have a music studio as a major expense, my friend has a revenue making bar which he uses to make his television program.

The TV program may only be shown on the public network which is notorious for having low ratings, but it certainly does have a strong following with the bar-patrons and the fans of the different bands and the TV ratings for my friends music show has been steadily growing even though the total network is relatively flat.

Having a few quiet ales with my friend, he explained how he built up the “brand loyalty” for both the bands and his TV show. And it was here where I saw a very fast way to use technology to grow a business and loyalty with its customer base. The technology is called “Text to Screen” and it is where people send text messages on their phones – which we all know everyone has at least one mobile phone, and the messages can be shown on television and on the web.

My friend uses “text to screen” within his hotel for the audience to vote on songs they favor and for them to request songs to be played. And he also promotes it on his television show for competitions and viewer ratings of the different bands. The collective results of sometimes hundreds of incoming text messages get tallied up in real-time and shown both on the TV screen and the Internet, so there is a real-time interaction with the audience. I’m very impressed with this clever use of technology.

Dead Car Battery FAQS

You should think of your car battery as the heart of your vehicle. It is its power unit. You would think the engine would be a better metaphor, but your car battery is what essentially gives your vehicle power. Just like you wouldn’t want your body to go without a beating heart, you wouldn’t want your vehicle to go without power. Otherwise, you’ll end up getting stuck somewhere because of a dead or defective battery. The best method for maintaining a functional and reliable unit is to have your vehicle serviced professionally at least twice per year.

If you are concerned about your “power unit”, or simply wish to learn more about them, continue reading for some frequently asked questions about dead batteries, as well as, their answers.

How Do I Know if My Car Battery is Dying?

There are several signs that indicate it’s time to service or replace your car battery. These signs include but are not limited to: slow engine crank, weak engine power, dashboard lights illuminated (even if it seems unrelated), check engine light turns on, low fluid, dim lights (interior and exterior), sluggish car start, bloated casing, smell of sulfur or rotten eggs, and more.

Why Did My Battery Die?

The most common cause for a dead battery is drainage. If you leave your headlights or interior lights on all night by accident, you may wake up to find that your car power is dead. A simple jump-start will fix this issues in as little as a five minutes. Other circumstances that can cause power drainage include not closing the visor or glove box all the way, leaving a stereo on, leaving a door ajar, and leaving the dome light on. After several hours, it will drain entirely, even sooner if it’s old or close to replacement.

As for other reasons why your car battery might have died, things like parasitic draw, defective cells, low fluid, and more can all play a role. It is best to have yours inspected by a trained mechanic for accurate and professional assistance.

How Long Do Car Batteries Last?

The typical lifespan for a standard lead-acid car unit is between 3 to 5 years. For those who drive often or long distances, change out your batteries closer to the 3 year mark. This is recommended for older vehicles as well. Keep in mind that although this is the standard lifespan, there are several factors that can shorten the life of your car battery.

How Can I Tell the Age of My Battery?

The age of your automotive battery is easy to locate. The manufacturer date is always stamped on a label, which is usually on its side. The information on the label will provide the date it was sent by the manufacturer. The first two characters of the label represent different pieces of information. The letter represents the month it was made, while the number represents the year (i.e. JAN=A, FEB=B, 9=1999, 1=2001, etc.).

SIM Card – The Brain of the Cell Phone

Cell phones are becoming increasingly popular due to many reasons. Today, you can find it in hands of a child as well as an old person. The reason behind its popularity is that they can be taken anywhere as they are portable, they are a good way of staying in touch with other people by mean of calls and SMS (short messaging service), and they have many other functions such as internet And camera, and much more. The old cell devices were big and did not have many functions as well. But now, experts are trying their best to give maximum functions in just one device. Now, the cell phones are launched in different styles, models, designs and colors which suit every person. Some are just for style while some are for work and business.

Cell phones have become an important part of everyone's life, but to make them work, a SIM Card is required. Some mobiles do not need it but the GSM mobile phones require them to function. SIM stands for Subscriber Identity Module. It is a very small microchip which is almost the size of a stamp that is required for posting something. In the cell phone, you can find it or place it benefit the battery of the cell phone. In a SIM, you can store all your important details such as contact numbers of different people. This way you can buy your new cell and simply put the SIM in it without losing the data.

The size of SIM varies. They come in three sizes. One size is the same size as a credit card, one has a thickness of 25 mm and 15 mm width while the third one is chamfered. Chamfered SIM is more popular and used more because they prevent the misinsertion of SIM in the required unit for the mobile device to work. The two SIM of smaller sizes comes attached in a card of credit card size which can be used in larger devices. If it is not used in larger devices but used in simple cell phones, then the SIM is attached to the card by small links which can be broken easily to take off the SIM and use it in the cell phone.

Some cell phones do not require a SIM card. They are specially made in such a way which has space for memory. In these mobile phones, you use special digit access 'NAM' for access to the memory. Once you have access to it, you can use any information stored there or even store new information. For security and for data not to be lost somehow, Service Provider puts a special lock on it, known as MSL (Master Confidential Lock).

There are also some cellular devices which have the capability of containing two SIM cards. This way the person does not have to keep two cell phones for two SIM cards. But naturally, they are more expensive than the normal cell phones. So when you go to the market to buy a cell phone, make sure to search around so you can have the best one in your hand.

Bluetooth Headphones Tips – Prolonging Li-Ion Battery Life

Many Bluetooth headphones use the lithium-ion type of rechargeable battery. It is actually the most popular type of rechargeable battery not just among Bluetooth headsets but also for other electronic devices such as laptops and cell phones.

One main reason that Li-ion (lithium-ion) batteries are the favorite battery type of a lot of Bluetooth headphones is that these kinds of batteries have a bigger energy storage capacity. What this means is that Li-ion batteries have a greater energy-to-material ratio than the other kinds, such as nickel metal hydride (NiMH) or nickel-cadmium (NiCd) batteries. For the same amount of nickel or nickel-cadmium, the lithium-ion battery can hold more power.

The second main reason is that Li-on batteries do not degrade in performance even if you repower them while they are not completely depleted of stored power. Unlike other batteries, the Li-ion battery does not show the so-called memory effect. It also has stronger resistance to severe temperatures and does not self-discharge as fast as the other types when it is in storage.

Much as everyone would like Li-ion batteries to be eternal, the fact is that they have a limited life. When used appropriately and cared for, they can actually provide your Bluetooth headsets with power up to about three years. The key here is in knowing how to make your Bluetooth earphones’ Li-ion battery packs reach their optimal life span. Here are a few tips.

Do not completely empty your battery of power. Li-ion batteries actually do not need to be fully empty before you need to recharge them. As a matter of fact, you will decrease the life span of your batteries if you frequently let them go empty first before recharging them. However, it is also healthy to completely discharge your Li-ion battery from time to time, say, after every 25 or 30 partial recharge cycles.

Never subject your Li-on battery to high temperature when you recharge them. Not only will the heat be a safety risk but will also shorten your battery’s life and energy capacity.

If you are intending to leave your Bluetooth headsets unused for some time, you should make sure that the batteries are at least half-charged. Also, never leave the battery inside your Bluetooth earphones if you won’t be using the devices for a long period. If you do, the active material may leak out and corrode and damage your unit. Store the batteries in a cool place. Even the refrigerator will do, but never the freezer.

These practical tips are easy to remember. If you keep them in mind and follow them, you can be sure that your Li-ion battery for your Bluetooth headphones will last up to its maximum lifespan.
