Have You Ever Had a Battery Leak in a TV-VCR Remote?

A battery leak in a flashlight is not too bad. You simply clean the contacts and all is well, but a battery leak in an electronic device typically spells doom for the device. The fluid that comes out of the battery is corrosive and will normally cause damage to the sensitive circuitry in an electronic device.

There is hope! Did you know that most battery company's actually Guarantee that their battery will not leak and damage your electronic device? The next time you buy a set of batteries, look on the package for a guarantee. If it does not have a guarantee, I would stay away from those batteries.

NOTE: I have only seen this type of guarantee on standard size Alkaline batteries: AA, C, D, and a few watch batteries. I'm not sure if re-chargeable batteries leak and I'm not sure if they offer this type of guarantee.

When batteries leak, if the item is not that expensive, most people will simply throw the item away and buy a new item, but what about bigger ticket items like a digital camera? Battery leaks are not covered by the camera warranty, and having someone clean the battery leak could void your camera warranty. This is the where battery guarantees come into play.

For example, I had an $ 80 dive light in which the batteries leaked. I thought this was really strange because I changed the batteries weekly. TIP: Never go night diving with old batteries. I sent the dive light to the battery company and I received a new light (newer model) and new batteries.

Example two, my friend had an old camera winder which was damaged by leaking batteries. We sent the winder to the company and in a few weeks the battery company sent a check to buy a new winder and of course new batteries.

The obvious drawback to the guarantee is you have to pay to ship your item to the company, and you will be without the item for a while (4-6 weeks). Also, it is the company's discretion to repair or replace the item. For me, it's a hassle to send the item to the battery company if a replacement can be purchased for less than $ 20.

Do's and Don'ts:

1. Do make sure the battery company offers a guarantee on their batteries and read the terms of the guarantee.
1. Do not mix and match batteries? This will increase your chances of experiencing a leak and this will void the guarantee.
2. Do not leave batteries in electronic devices for extended periods of time.
3. Do not expose electronic devices to excessive heat, as heat will cause a leak and possibly worse, an explosion.

Whenever possible, buy rechargeable batteries. They can be used over and over again, but they need to be used, and over time they will begin to lose their ability to hold a charge. Do not expect a rechargeable battery to hold a charge after sitting in your desk drawer for two months. You will be able to recharge the battery, but the charge will not last as long.

Do not throw that thing away just because the batteries leaked in it! Check if the battery company has a guarantee!

How Does An Internal Cardiac Defibrillator Work?

Implantable cardioverter defibrillator or ICD is a small device similar to a pacemaker, attached to the heart of a person. People suffering with conditions like arrhythmias are under the constant risk of heart failure. Irregular heartbeats caused by arrhythmias will cause sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) which will lead to stroke or death if it is not treated within a few minutes. ICD's are a boon to people suffering from such heart issues.

The Implanted defibrillator fixed under the skin, will monitor the heartbeat of a person constantly and ensure that they are treated immediately if there is any irregularity in the heat beat. The internal defibrillator will be attached to a patient's body via small wires with electrodes. The heart's chambers will be connected to these electrodes enabling them to monitor the electrical impulses as well as the steadiness of the palpitations. ICD will send low-power electrical impulses to the various heart chambers making it work properly again. Implantable cardioverter defibrillator or ICD's replicate the exact electrical impulses generated naturally inside our heart when it expends and contracts regularly.

Internal defibrillator devices are important for people who are recovering from surgeries and severe cardiac arrests. They are at a high risk of experiencing arrhythmias. Patients in such vulnerable conditions die before they reach the hospital because the heart does not receive enough stimulation for more than five or ten minutes. Implantable cardioverter defibrillator devices help them live a long life by treating them within minutes of identifying the symbols.

A small metal box with batteries will be attached under the skin. The box will have computer chips and pulse monitors attached to it. The heart's rhythmic beats and electrical activity is kept under constant surveillance by this implanted defibrillator. The record of this electrical activity occurring in the heart is important for any doctor to determine the condition of the patient.

The Implantable cardioverter defibrillator devices can be programmed to respond according to the heartbeat of the severity of the arrhythmia. Stronger electrical pulses are usually painful but useful in keeping the patient alive until they reach the hospital. Most of the implanted defibrillator devices are capable of adjusting them according to the situation of the patient automatically.

Modern machines are capable of recording ECG, monitoring the respiration, temperature of the body, pulse range and several other technical details necessary for a physician to work on the patient immediately. This small device is capable of giving electrical shocks extending up to 360 joules depending upon the heartbeat of the patient. Such immunity shocks are usually painful and administrated only in rare conditions.

The cost of the implantable cordioverter defibrillator and the pacemakers are more or less the same. But implanted defibrillator devices do more work than the pacemakers. In fact internal defibrillator devices double as pacemakers too in addition to performing various other functions. The device does not cause side effects and is capable of working for several years without causing any complications. ICD's are indeed one of the best inventions of the modern medical science used to save hundreds of lives every year.

Stopping the Madness of Unwanted Calls and Messages to Your Cell Phone

Because our cell phone typically accompanies us everywhere, unwanted calls to them take on a particularly annoying and sometimes frightening tone. Errant telemarketing calls or spam in the form of text messages can interrupt at inopportune times and can carry a charge to the receiver either in the form of minutes or cash. On the other hand, harassing calls can be not only inconvenient but threatening as well. Questions regarding how to reduce or eliminate unwanted calls to a cell phone are one of the most frequent topics presented to customer support forums in the cellular industry.

Certainly there are steps that all cell phone owners can take to combat the intrusion and expense of unwanted calls and text messages as well as additional safeguards that are specific to individual cell phone models. Becoming familiar with the protective features offered via the cellular provider is easy via their website in most cases. Reviewing the manual for a specific cell phone will also inform customers of any functions that may allow them to bar calls and messages or limit their intrusion.

A few of the common precautions and suggestions include:

o Protect cell phone numbers from spam. Avoid giving out cell phone numbers but when it is necessary become aware of the privacy policy of the businesses to which such information is provided. Clearly it is best to avoid providing a cell phone number to a business that would possibly sell the information to potential spammers.

Be aware when ordering or signing up for newsletters, downloads, and so forth that users may be agreeing to receive calls or messages from the company in the future; thus, be sure to uncheck any boxes indicating agreement to receive these intrusions if they are not wanted.

Another important measure to avoid spam is to get on the “Do Not Call” list; register cell phone numbers at donotcall.gov.

o If a user is receiving excessive spam, they should contact their cellular provider to see how the company can assist. If the sender of unwanted text messages is known, in some instances they can be added to a “block list” for the user which is managed through the cellular providers’ website. The cellular company should also reverse any charges for spam received.

o Many cell phones, particularly smartphones, allow users to block “private” or unknown callers which would encompass most spammers. Check the manual for instructions on how to program this feature. Another option is to program the phone to have all “private” or unknown callers assigned a silent ringtone that will not disturb the user, and thus the call will roll to voicemail from where it can later be deleted. Other cell phones allow users to program it to send all incoming calls to voicemail unless the caller is on their contact list. This final option can also be very useful if the user is receiving harassing phone calls.

o Various cell phones have filtering capabilities; users simply need to become acquainted with the options available for their phone. For instance, some can block international calls, or calls when roaming, to avoid excessive charges. Some smartphones allow users to block specific numbers which is particularly effective when receiving harassing phone calls.

o When steps have been taken to eliminate spam received on a cell phone but it persists, it is wise to contact the FCC. Although they cannot deal with individual consumer complaints, they can act to issue citations to violators of the “Do Not Call” list and other related legislation. In extreme cases, it is possible of course to disable the text message function altogether via the cellular provider.

o If harassing calls to a cell phone continue, both the police and the cellular provider should be contacted. Reports should be filed and information regarding the date, time, and content of the calls need to be kept. In extreme cases, changing the cell phone number is advisable.

Find Someone's Name From a Cell Number – The Most Difficult Part Is Picking the Right Service!

You have the mobile number and you want to know who owns it. How do you find out? According to statistics, this is a question that runs through the minds of at least 50 thousand people in the US on a regular day. And people trace numbers for various reasons.

  • To check on their spouses – to find out who they're talking to and if they're cheating
  • To identify an anonymous caller
  • To avoid calls from certain people etc.

Why you will not find cell numbers in the white pages

Mobile phones are considered 'personal'. Why landlines are not, we have no clue. But the thing is, there exist certain laws that are enforced to protect wireless phone users and so user information can not be published on public directories. That's why you can not lookup a cell number on the white or yellow pages.

Reverse Cell Phone Directories aka Online reverse mobile directories

If you do a brief search on the web, you'll come across plenty of privately-owned online databases that help you trace a wireless number within minutes. And the best thing about them is:

  • They're super fast – takes just 2-3 minutes
  • It's completely confidential (nobody knows that you've been tracing cellular numbers)
  • You can look-up as many numbers as you like

The Most Difficult Part is Picking The Right Service. 2 things you should look for!

  • Look for an online directory with at least 215 million numbers. That's about 90% of mobile phones in the USA. This will ensure that you will not waste your time on directories that have numbers from a few states or only a particular wireless carrier.
  • Make sure that it's one that's frequently updated – if not, there is a high probability that you will get information on the previous owner of that number (when people change their wireless plans, their companies recycle the numbers and give them to new subscribers)

How Can I Fix My Cell Phone – It Got Wet

Ever ran into a body of water with your phone in your pocket?

I have witnessed this many times. It is a common mistake that almost everyone makes at one point in their life. Cell phone manufacturers have gotten so technologically brilliant with their designs that they have made it harder for us to remember that we are carrying their products.

If you are one of the unfortunate and have ruined your cell phone in a body of water I may be able to help. This method has worked for me in the past, but I cannot guarantee it will work for you.

First the phones battery must be removed. Do NOT attempt to power the phone on while it is wet. It will only cause even worse damage.

Once the battery is removed the phone will need to be dried out. If the phone was dropped in salt water, (yes the one who had a little to much to drink and fell overboard cell phone in hand) the salt water must be rinsed out and then proceed to drying. I recommend using compressed air. If no compressed air is on hand then grab a hair dryer and use the cool air to blow out as much water as possible.

After you have blown out as much water as you can you will then want to place your phone in the oven, on 175 F for 4-5 hours. (Remember, don’t put the battery in for this step it may be dangerous.)

Once your phone is done cooking take it out and replace the dry battery, if you bought a new battery even better. At this point you may or may not try to power the phone up. I recommend plugging it in to the charger for a while to get a full charge and then power it on.

This works 90% of the time if you catch the phone before its too late. If this doesn’t work for you then you can always buy a new cell phone. I run a small web site that has the best deals on the net for the latest phones.

Cell Phone Basics – How Cell Phones Work

Cellular phones, nowdays, are used by almost everyone. These gadgets do not serve only as a means of communication, but also as music players, organizers, cameras, and radios. With this, the rise of the percentage of cell phone users has been increasing rapidly. In fact, a study made by the Marist Institute for Public Opinion in the United States reported that 87 percent of respondents admit owning a cellular phone.

To best understand how cell phones work, let us first dissect what tiny tools are working inside them:

Circuit board that runs the entire system. This is one of the most important parts of a cellphone and is considered as the brain of the gadget.

LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) Screen.

Battery which powers the cellular phone.

Keyboard maintaining of 0 to 9 and miscellaneous function buttons.

Microphone and Speakers.

Antenna used to collect signals.

Mobile phones also come with multiple enhancement accessories most of which are manufactured by a third party manufacturer. An example would be cell phone signal boosters or wireless extenders which improves cell phone signal. These are important accessories since unlike land line phones, mobile phones may encounter fluctuations in signal.

So how do cell phones work? Wireless technology has allowed cellular phones to transmit calls without the use of telephone lines to transmit and convert sound waves. In its very basic sense, calls and SMS are transmitted by the use of cell stations. Also called base stations, these cell stations serve as a bridge in connecting electronic signals from one mobile phone to another. For example, when calling someone, your cell phone will emit electronic signals to the nearest cell station and will then go through a number of advanced equipments such as a satellite until these electronic signals are transmitted to the cell station nearest to the person you are calling which will then be responsible in transferring these signals to the phone of the recipient.

Solar Mole Repellers – Do They Work?

Anyone, who has moles, gophers, voles, or various other burrowing animals will not likely plan to waste their time or cash on repellers that aren’t efficient, even when these unwanted animals are often very troublesome, the majority of people choose to have a humane method to rid their yard of them. A cost-effective and humane selection is a solar mole repeller, so people ask, “Do these solar mole repellers work?” The answer then is “Absolutely!” There is nothing that is going to be 100% effective, but this style of repeller works well under most conditions.

How Do They Work?

The solar mole repeller functions by switching vibrations in your yard and sound waves, which the moles don’t especially like and often will move away from the repellers. The batteries that power the repellers are charged from the solar energy panels. The batteries can hold enough power to repel moles for a couple days, in case there isn’t any sunlight, the solar repellers still work and may carry on doing their job.

What Types Work?

The solar mole repellers have stakes which go directly into the ground with the solar panel above the soil. Lots of people find the kind of stake that has worked the most effective is aluminum stakes. Green stakes may very well be most desired type since they blend in with the grass. Other buyers take advantage of the stakes to enhance the decor of the yard, so they may select a type that comes in a wide range of colors or has a LED light to increase the lighting of the area.

How Many Are Needed?

For optimum effectiveness, solar mole repellers really need to be spaced so there exists a slight overlapping of the forty-eight-ft. radius which the repellers work within. Start with enough to cover the sq. footage of the area that there’s a problem with burrowing animals. Some feel that aluminum stakes may work efficiently inside of a larger radius versus the plastic stakes. It may need 2 or 3 days and occasionally 7 days roughly until the moles vacate the area. It could be necessary to reposition the stakes to improve efficiency. The moles will continue to burrow outside of the radius so there needs to be enough stakes to prevent the moles far enough away to no longer be a complication.

When They Don’t Work?

Areas which can be heavily shaded will not be able to get adequate sunlight to charge the battery, therefore the solar mole repellers won’t work. Caliche (sedimentary rock), high concentration of large stones, and large rocks will prevent the sound waves and vibrations from traveling in the soil, so the repeller won’t be as effective since it will be in soil that the vibrations and sounds can go through easily.
